In today’s Post there were already reports that some youngsters were turning away from Mr. Jackson in favor of a newcomer who goes by the name “Prince,” and is apparently planning a Washington concert. Will he receive a Presidential letter? How will we decide which performers do and which do not?
From John Roberts’s letter advising President Reagan against inviting Michael Jackson & his brothers to the White House in 1984. [the Awl] As commenters already pointed out, by this time “newcomer” Prince had already recorded Purple Rain.
The rest of the now Chief Justice’s correspondences advising the president against flattering Jackson are amazing. [nyt] I can’t believe these weren’t a bigger issue in his confirmation hearings.
