“Back in the seventies, C. Etzel Pearcy, a professor of geography, suggested redrawing all the borders of the American states. The country would then comprise thirty eight states, rather than fifty, with each new name representing an area’s physical or cultural distinctiveness.”
—from “Unusual and Marvelous Maps”
Not sure why northern and central alaska would be named “Seward,” as the town of Seward is not in that section, and the man Seward never went there, nor did he particularly care about purchasing that portion of the state - he mainly interested in the Southwest. I’d say “The Arctic,” or “The Yukon” would be a more appropriate name.
This geography professor also seemed not to recognize that Dearborn is in the eastern part of Michigan. His proposed division of the state’s upper peninsula is also downright batty, just for the sake of being cartographically showy.
