The earthquake that damaged the elevated highway running between this city’s glassy downtown and its waterfront happened in 2001, the same year Greg Nickels was elected mayor. Eight years later, after several seismic studies and two complicated terms in office, it remains unclear what will become of the old road — and of the mayor.
New York looks west, trying to cast our election in geologic terms. [nyt] Seriously though, I can’t believe that Nickels might not make it into the general. Not that I love him or anything, but the two leading candidates represent some of the my least favorite qualities in local politics — endless wavering about transit decisions and freaking out about snowstorms.
