Who (or rather what) They Are: No, they’re not real people. They are nicknames for companies:
Fannie Mae = Federal National Mortgage Association
Freddie Mac = Federal Home Loan and Mortgage Corporation(more)
FINALLY, someone writes a concise explanation. I’ve been feeling like an idiot for not knowing the details of Fannie and Freddie with them in the news everyday with hardly an appositive for context.
